OBJECTIVE
Enel had the need to transport a transformer from the Fano plant to the Fermignano plant.
ANALYSIS During the analysis, a series of difficulties have emerged in the loading and unloading process of the transformer inside the plant due to high voltage capacities that could have reached 200,000 volts.
The critical aspects were, as well as the high voltages, the narrow spaces due to walls and columns, limiting the maneuvering spaces.
Inspections were made both in the plants and along the route where the convoy would have passed.
The route was characterised by winding roads with steep sections. This makes the transport very dangerous, since as well as the 'standard' difficulties of such a large convoy, there is the variable of the oil contained in the transformer that could drip along the road and cause environmental damage and make the asphalt very slippery and therefore dangerous for other vehicles.
Another very sensible factor is the softness of components of the transformer made of ceramic. Just touching a branch could cause enormous damage to the transformer.
Lastly, the final critical factor, was the urgency for the realisation of the project. The entire Fermignano region was risking a black out and it would have taken, by law, more than 15 days to obtain the necessary permits for the transport.

STRATEGY To satisfy all the security requirements it was decided to use more technological equipment that, thanks to the programming, can be engaged in actions that reduce the risk and danger factors.
It was necessary to knock down the columns of the two entrance gates of the plants so that it was easier to go through them. The objects that were knocked down were then re-built at the end of the operation.
The vehicles entered the plant thanks to the creation of a smaller convoy (special loader with 5 axles) where the transformer was loaded. Once out of the plant, the transformer was put in a another special loader with 8 axles that was considered suitable for the specific transport. The same operation was done in the unloading process.
It was decided to use a truck and a special loader with pneumatic suspensions to guarantee the transformer constantly horizontal along the whole route.
Permits were requested to appropriate Bodies that were personally presented so to speed up the process for the release of the documents. The permits were withdrawn the same day of the presentation and the project was successful the day after the date specified by the customer.

INSTRUMENTS The dimensions and weight of the transport have determined the execution of the job through the special loader with 5 + 3 axles and a 3 axle truck. For the handling, a 160 ton crane and a special loader were used.
